Hey, it’s your faithful editor here.
We’re currently in the middle of a transformative moment in history. What we’re seeing is not a series of protests, but an uprising, possibly a sea change, about systemic racism in the United States, our relationship with police, and possibly even our relationship with capitalism.
So I’ve been wondering: what should Extinction Rebellion be doing?
XR’s ultimate goal is to bring a moment of social reckoning on climate change. This is a reckoning larger than any of us could have expected, but it doesn’t belong to us. It belongs to the Movement for Black Lives and the cause of ending centuries of racial injustice. It’s a great moment for those who are willing to risk arrest with direct action, but it’s also not a climate issue…or is it? And, as Tri Sanger reminds us, we are still in a pandemic.
I’ve recently made my own thoughts pretty clear, but I’m not XR. We all are.
Over the next week or so, I’d like to publish readers’ thoughts. Even if it’s just a couple of sentences, please let us know what you think.
