Necessity: Part II: Support the Film!

By Jan Haaken, Director of Necessity

We are excited to announce that we are almost finished with post-production on Necessity II: Rail, Rivers and the Thin Green Line. Continuing the story in Necessity I of the Indigenous-led fight to stop Line 3 in Minnesota and activists use of the necessity defense, Part II is set in the Columbia River Gorge region and follows activists in Portland [including XRPDX activists – Ed.] as they also enlist the necessity defense in a jury trial. This film on climate resistance in the Pacific Northwest brings into view a historical landscape of tribal leaders, Indigenous activists and white allies as they resist oil trains, terminals and trucks carrying their lethal products to market.

Our goal is to raise the final $16,000 needed to complete editing, sound design, animation and color grading in order to debut this film in October 2021. Donors of $100 or more will be included in the film’s end credits and donations of $500 or more from organizations will be included as sponsors.

In addition to working on the production of Necessity II over the past year, continuing to work under Oregon State guidelines for filmmakers, the team has produced a series of videos on climate actions carried out by activist organizations.
