On January 15th, activists launched a protest on the site of a proposed open-pit mine in Northern Nevada, at a place called Thacker Pass on traditional Northern Paiute/Western Shoshone territory.
The $1.4 billion Lithium Americas strip mine proposed for this site would suck up and pollute billions of gallons of water, destroy old-growth sagebrush steppe habitat, and harm sage-grouse, Lahontan cutthroat trout, pronghorn antelope, pygmy rabbits, burrowing owls, and countless other species. Additionally, many regulatory corners are being cut and it is unclear whether it’s legal for the mine to begin operating at all.
The protest camp has now been in place for over a month, and ongoing support is needed! People are needed to visit camp, donate to support, and help organize pressure campaigns.
