Let’s Stop Trans Mountain!

From our Friends at Stand Up to Oil:

Many Indigenous communities have consistently and repeatedly rejected the Trans Mountain pipeline and tanker project (TMX) – but the Canadian government continues to plow ahead with construction. Right now, the land is being ripped up for Trans Mountain, and we need your help to stop this toxic project. Join us for a week of action starting June 14th.

TMX is a reckless project that if completed would be bigger than KXL, and would increase tanker traffic through shared Washington and British Columbia waters by seven hundred percent, endangering the already struggling Southern Resident orca population.

Each year, Trans Mountain needs $500 million in insurance coverage to operate their existing pipeline and even more for the expansion. Insurance certificates expire every August, so we’re in a pivotal decision-making window for insurers and it’s important that we make our voices heard. Pipeline and tanker projects need insurance in order to operate, that’s why we’re demanding that insurance giants like Liberty Mutual, Chubb, AIG and others drop insurance coverage of TMX and rule out insuring the tar sands sector altogether. [Note: XRPDX has protested at Liberty Mutual’s offices in Portland and plans to continue. — Ed.]

We’ve got momentum! One insurer just dropped the toxic pipeline, citing the risks– let’s get them all to follow suit.

Actions to take:
