“Change the system” is commonly heard, but what kind of system do we want? In the face of growing inequity and climate chaos, business as usual is no longer an option. Fortunately, there are paths forward. The documentary film, “Outgrow the System,” shares new economic perspectives that have the potential to change the world at its core.
On Friday, November 15th, “Outgrow the System” will be showing at the Moriarty Auditorium, 705 N Killingsworth, Portland, on the PCC Cascade campus. The documentary will explore how society can transition to a sustainable and equitable economic system.
A systemic economic transition that honors people and planet over profit – a solidarity or well-being economy – is vital to a rapid movement away from Earth-destroying material and fossil fuel extraction, production and consumption. It also offers a path forward to more equitable and thriving communities throughout the world.
The most sustainable green technology is not enough – we need to reduce the demand for and acceptance of the damaging forms of production and consumption as well as the damaging forms of economic control by corporations and the wealthy, and work towards a different kind of economy.
This one hour film starts at 7pm. It will be followed by a facilitated panel session from 8 to 9 pm. The panel speakers, through their organization’s efforts, will reflect the values and practices promoted in the film.
Panelists include:
Qiddist Ashe of the Black Oregon Land Trust
Saoirse Cox of Kalikasan (Philippine Solidarity Organization)
Joanne Shepard of the Oregon Education Association
Maria Sipin of Participatory Budgeting Oregon
Abasi Umoh of the Community Energy Project
Laura Nash of the People’s Economy Lab as facilitator.
We view this as the beginning of further community conversations and actions we can take together on the path to the sustainable and equitable world we all want.
